Coral reforestation with sexual reproduction

11.12.2024

The sexual reproduction of corals is one of the keys to the sustainable reforestation of coral reefs. In the Western Indian Ocean (WIO), however, there is hardly any data on exactly when which coral species spawns. This knowledge is essential in order to support the reproduction process in a targeted manner.

With marine biologist Ashley Lillis, we have started to conduct four night dives per month to evaluate the exact spawning dates and times. A fascinating experience that not only provides new insights into the world of corals, but is already showing initial success. If we know exactly when which coral species spawn, we can collect eggs and seeds and support fertilization in a targeted manner. This method makes it possible to increase natural multiplication many times over, as only a fraction of the eggs and sperm meet in open water.

Another example of our work is our participation in the global study on the coral species Porites rus. This coral spawns around the world on the same day at the same time! Even in the Indian Ocean? Together with three teams in Jambiani we tried to observe the Porites spawning activity, but without success. However, partners on Chumbe Island, on the west coast, were lucky and were able to document the spawning. Failures are just as valuable as successes. They help to expand knowledge and improve methods.
