Coral Restorers for Mnemba Island

25.09.2021

During September we have trained three conservation rangers of the NGO Oceans Without Borders in coral reforestation practice. Among other things, we walked them through the excellent online course of the Reef Resilience Network and trained them in our farming and transplanting techniques.

The course covered a wide range of solutions for plannning and managing reforestation projects. Other activities included the production of farm materials or how to hold awareness events in schools to spark children’s interest for marine conservation. And of course, a lot of diving!

The three motivated guys are now officially certified coral restorers. Soon they will start to build up a coral farm on Mnemba Island to cultivate corals for  reforestation in the protected zone whose management is also to be massively improved. Not only local fishermen who do not follow the rules, but also large numbers of tourists cause constant damage to the reefs around Mnemba Island.

Playing the coral game

Oceans Without Borders is a unique collaboration between &Beyond - a luxury travel company with its roots in conservation and Africa Foundation - a non-profit organization dedicated to community-led development and conservation of Africa's natural environments.
